Terms of use

Last reviewed 2026-09-08

These terms cover your use of RideWindow at ridewindow.online. Using the site means you accept them. They are written to be read, not to be padded, so they only describe things the service actually does. What happens to your data is a separate page: Privacy & storage.

What RideWindow is

RideWindow is a free weather-scoring tool for motorcyclists. It turns a weather forecast into a 0–100 ride score for a place and an hour, shows that score across the next seven days, and scores a whole route stretch by stretch.

It is run by one person as a personal project. There is no company, no paid tier and nothing to buy. The service is provided as is, with no promise that it fits any particular purpose.

Safety

Read this one. A ride score is an opinion about the weather. It is not a safety guarantee, not a road-condition report and not permission to ride.

The score is calculated from forecast temperature, precipitation, wind, visibility, recent rain and daylight for a set of coordinates. It knows nothing about traffic, road works, closures, gravel, diesel, mud, a patch of ice on one shaded bend, the state of your tyres or brakes, or your own experience and how you feel today. A high score on a road you do not know is still an unknown road.

The grip figure is calculated for a reference surface: clean, well-maintained asphalt. It answers "how much grip does this weather cost", not "how much grip does this road have". Gravel, debris, diesel, mud, road paint, tar snakes, cobbles, patched or polished tarmac, a wet manhole cover and unmade surfaces are not modelled at all, and any of them can take more grip than the weather ever will.

You alone decide whether to ride, and you are responsible for obeying the traffic law of the country you are riding in and for riding to the conditions you actually find.

Route scoring is an approximation by design. A route is sampled at up to 15 points, at least 10 km apart, and each sample is scored for the hour you are expected to reach it based on a single average speed you choose. Between two samples the weather is assumed, not measured, and a stop, traffic or a slower pace moves every arrival time.

A route you draw on the map is a series of straight lines between the pins you place. It does not follow roads, so its distance and its arrival times are estimates, and the line on the map is not a road that exists. RideWindow is not a navigation system, gives no turn-by-turn guidance and must not be used as one.

Weather data

Forecasts come from Open-Meteo. Forecasts are sometimes wrong, and they are wrong more often the further ahead they look. Responses are cached for up to 15 minutes per location, so a score you see can be that little bit behind the newest data.

We give no warranty that any forecast, score, ride window or route score is accurate, complete or current.

Accounts

  • Accounts are free. An account is for one person; do not share it.
  • Give a real email address you can read. It is the only way to reset your password, and a reset link is valid for one hour.
  • Keep your password to yourself. You are responsible for what happens under your account. Tell us if you think someone else has got into it.
  • We may lock or delete an account that abuses the service or breaks the acceptable use rules below.
  • You can delete your own account at any time under Settings → Account. That erases your profile, preferences, saved locations, saved routes, notification settings, sign-in sessions and sign-in history immediately, and it cannot be undone.

Acceptable use

Please do not:

  • Send automated bulk requests or scrape the service. The API is rate limited: 30 requests per minute for anonymous callers, 120 per minute once signed in, 10 per minute for route scoring, and 10 attempts per 15 minutes for signing in and for password resets. Working around those limits is not allowed.
  • Attack or try to bypass authentication, or read, change or delete another rider's data.
  • Upload anything that is not a GPX file. Uploads are capped at 5 MB and routes at 1–2000 km.
  • Resell the output, or pass scores, forecasts or ride windows off as your own service.

Your content

Your content is the GPX files you upload, the routes you draw, the names you give them and the locations you save. It stays yours. We store it only to provide the feature you used it for. We do not sell it, publish it or show it to other riders.

A GPX upload is parsed in memory and discarded once the response is sent. Nothing is kept unless you press Save, and then only the simplified shape of the route, its name and your chosen average speed. Scores are never stored, because opening a route re-scores it against the forecast at that moment. An account can hold 50 saved routes; delete one to save another.

You can delete any saved route or location at any time, and deleting your account removes all of them.

Third-party services and attribution

  • OpenStreetMap. Map tiles and place search come from OpenStreetMap. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence. Their tile usage policy applies to the maps you load here.
  • Open-Meteo. Weather forecasts, requested by our server with coordinates only.
  • Railway. Hosting for the application and its database.
  • Resend. Delivery of the emails we send: password resets, contact-form messages and ride-window digests.

What each of them receives is set out on the privacy page.

Availability

RideWindow is free and runs on a free hosting tier. There is no uptime promise and no support commitment. It can be slow, unavailable or restarted without notice, and features can change or be withdrawn.

Email depends on a third-party provider, so a password reset or a digest can be delayed or fail to arrive for reasons outside our control. If a reset email does not reach you, write to us.

Liability

The service is provided without any warranty. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss or damage arising from relying on a score, a forecast, a ride window or a route score, from the service being unavailable, or from data being lost.

Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected.

Changes to these terms

These terms can change as the service changes. The date at the top of this page is when they were last reviewed, and a material change is announced on this page. Continuing to use RideWindow after a change means you accept the new version.

Contact and governing law

Legal and data-protection questions: [email protected]. Everything else, including bug reports and feature requests: [email protected], or use the contact form.

These terms are governed by the law of the European Union: EU consumer protection law and the GDPR apply to this service. If you live in a country whose law gives you stronger mandatory protection, you keep that protection — nothing here takes it away.
